Going to Beijing in a couple days. Still have 50 pages of my manuscript to finish but I’m feeling a bit of malaise. It’s probably just a mix of hangover and burnout from cranking out ~80pages in the last week or so in preparation for going out of town.

Went to a dj set at an Italian style village church last night. The music was good but the vibe was a little sparse, so we went to a club closer to home I like called AXIS instead. We met two australian men and a dude from Xingjiang and hung out with them till like 4am.

zoë by a pond!

A guy at another bar made a joke at me that he had weed in a plastic bag. I asked to buy some and he laughed and revealed it was a just rabbit’s head.

I also talked for a long while to another guy (who coincidentally shared my birthday) who went to film school in Beijing about hating vertical content. He said because people in China or more susceptible to reels addictions because there’s more restrictions on pornography, especially if you’re a working class man with no access to VPN. As a result, the lowbrow dopamine stimulus of short form scrolling hooks them harder. I was going on a bit of a broken chinglish ramble about the attention economy and how everything is trying to sell you something, but he was just like “yeah, duh.” I showed him a picture of David Foster Wallace and he laughed and said he looked like a cult leader. We both liked Jim Jarmusch.

Also zoë made Chinese memes of me, and I got new jeans.
